In a significant political development that reflects the changing dynamics of Osun State’s political landscape, the Ìlérí Oluwa Youth Ambassador, a grassroots political movement established in 2018, has officially changed its name to Akin Ogunbiyi Youth Ambassador.
This historic transition comes after wide consultations and strategic deliberations among stakeholders, coordinators, and members of the movement across all local governments in Osun State.
Founded in 2018, the Ìlérí Oluwa Youth Ambassador played a vital role in supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its then-candidate, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, during the 2018 gubernatorial election. The movement has since built a formidable structure, maintaining active presence and membership across the entire state. Mr. Oyetola went on to become the Governor of Osun State and currently serves as Nigeria’s Minister of Blue Marine Economy.
However, as Osun’s political terrain evolves, members of the movement have taken a bold and strategic step to reposition themselves for the future of the state.
“The political atmosphere in Osun is shifting, and we recognize the need for visionary leadership that reflects equity and justice across all zones,” said Hon. Omowọnuọla Matthew Aderintọ, State Coordinator of the newly rebranded movement. “After careful consideration, we unanimously agreed to rally behind a capable, homegrown leader who can take Osun to greater heights, which is Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi.”
The move is also driven by longstanding concerns about fair representation, particularly in the Osun West Senatorial District. Iwo Federal Constituency, comprising Iwo, Ayedire, and Olaoluwa local governments, has long been one of the strongholds of the APC and has consistently delivered votes in key elections. Yet, the constituency has never produced a governor since the creation of Osun State.
With speculation that Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola may not run again and party provisions allowing any member to contest, stakeholders believe the time is ripe for Iwo Federal Constituency to present a viable candidate.
“If we miss this opportunity, we may have to wait another 24 years. This is why we believe Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, also known as Akintide, is the right choice,” Aderintọ added.
Dr. Ogunbiyi, a respected entrepreneur and philanthropist with deep ties to Osun West, has gained support from various quarters for his vision and capacity to lead. The rebranding of the movement is a strong signal of the unified support he enjoys at the grassroots level.
“This is not just a change of name, it is a reawakening of purpose and a reaffirmation of our commitment to progress, equity, and competent leadership,” the statement from the group reads.
The newly named Akin Ogunbiyi Youth Ambassador vows to remain active across all local governments, continuing its mission to educate, mobilize, and empower the youth for responsible civic engagement while championing the emergence of a governor from Osun West.
As Osun approaches another defining electoral cycle, all eyes will be on Iwo Federal Constituency and the unfolding momentum behind Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi.
